From the Reader who hated Reading..

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

—Dr. Seuss

Last year, if you would have told me to pick up a book and read it, I would’ve looked at you like you were crazy. Even for school, spark notes was my best friend. I thought reading was a waste of time, and in the time that I spent reading a book I could watch a whole season of Grey’s Anatomy. I went through life, pretending like books didnt exist, and I completely regret it now. I can just imagine myself going back in time, and telling myself how much I could get out of reading, so I am going to share my few tips an tricks to start to love those pages just as much as I do!

 Finding the perfect “First” book

The book that pulled me into loving reading, was Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, and let me tell you, reading that book changed my life. I am not going to say that the content of the book is what changed my life, because quite frankly I need to read it again to remember what it was about, but it definitely made my life flip flop. I went from spending all of my spare time, bing watching One Tree Hill, and instead began to crave to know the rest of the story. I wanted to know the knowledge that Liz Gilbert was putting into the universe, I wanted to take it all in.

When I first started reading for fun, I read very very slowly, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It took  me a month and a half to read the first couple of books that I really got into, before I could whip out a book in three to four days. It takes practice, just like anything else you do.

So for starters, you need to find something that really interests you, whether that be a fictional story, an autobiography, a self help book, a business book, a religious book, whatever your interest be, just find something. Here are some of my favorites:

Fiction:

The Harry Potter Series – J.K. Rowling

The Hunger Games Series – Suzanne Collins

Life’s Golden Ticket – Brendon Burchard

Autobiography:

Bossypants – Tina Fey

Eat Pray Love – Elizabeth Gilbert

Self Help:

You Are A Badass – Jen Sincero

Girlboss – Sophia Amoruso

Business:

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership – John C. Maxwell

Religious:

Live Original – Sadie Robertson
